Irv joined Bearence's predecessor agency in 2002 as a stockholder and board member. Prior to that, he spent more than 20 years with the CNA Insurance companies, with his last position as Officer and Territorial President for the Minneapolis territory. In the late 1980s, Irv was the Senior Manager responsible for the training needs for 20,000 employees of CNA.

Irv is active in the Carlson School of Business, where he has served as a mentor for business students since 2003. He also sits on one of the insurance carrier's advisory councils.

Drawing on his marketing background, Irv developed a hospitality niche for the agency. In 2007, two new niche markets were launched within the agency, including condominium associations and private schools. 

In 2005, Irv joined the Minnesota Multi Housing Association, where he has taught continuing education classes. In addition to the various business associations to which he belongs, Irv is deeply involved with several for not-for-profit organizations.
